I Don’t Believe in Competition

Synagogue: Darcei No’am

Location: New Jersey

Challenge: Design a meaningful parochet that integrates the words “Darchei No’am”- the name of this synagogue.

“Hi Chana,” said the familiar voice on the line- in perfect Hebrew. “I need your help. I just received an inquiry for a parohet from an American. As you know, I don’t speak English. Can you please take care of this order?”

A bit taken aback, I agreed. Why was I so socked? Because this was a phone call from a so-called ‘competitor’- an Israeli embroiderer specializing in parochets. But I was soon to learn that there really is no such thing as ‘competition’- if you don’t want there to be!

Mark M. turned out to be a friendly man who knew exactly what he wanted. B”H I quickly designed this meaningful Tree of Life-Darcei No’am parochet for him and he decided to add two more curtains, a bima and a Torah cover to the order! My ‘competitior’ was overjoyed with this large order and less than a year later…. I informed him that Mr. M. also wanted a complete white set for the High Holidays!
